
Several members of our outstanding community were recently recognized for their achievements and contributions to the UW and greater science communities. Congratulations to all!
- Sue Moore, Biology Affiliate Professor, was confirmed for Commissioner of the Marine Mammal Commission by the U.S. Senate. Sue was sworn in by Commission Chair, Dr. Frances Gulland, on January 5th, 2023.
- Three Biology undergraduates were honored as part of the 2023 Husky 100. These students are Nikhil Harikrishnan, Saeed Mahamood, and Max Perkins.
- Natalia Guayazan Palacios, Ph.D. candidate in the Steinbrenner lab, was awarded the prestigious USDA Predoctoral Fellowship from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture to study how the plant immune system responds to agriculturally relevant bacteria and caterpillars.
- Clemens Cabernard, Biology Associate Professor, was awarded a Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award (MIRA) from the NIH National Institute of General Medical Sciences, to study the cell and mechanobiology of asymmetric cell division.
- Sam Wasser, UW Biology Research Professor, co-executive director of the Center for Environmental Forensic Science, and Endowed Chair in Conservation Biology, was named a Fellow of the Explorer’s Club.
- Elli Theobald, Biology Associate Teaching Professor, was honored with a 2023 UW Distinguished Teaching Award. The Distinguished Teaching Award is amongst the highest teaching recognitions at the University of Washington.
- Janet Germeraad, Biology’s Academic Services Director, and Jason Patterson, Biology’s Senior Academic Counselor, were honored by the Association of Professional Advisers & Conselors (APAC) at the UW as July 2023 APAC Advisers of the Month.
- Casey Self, Biology Associate Teaching Professor, and a team of her students were awarded a UW Diversity Council's Diversity and Inclusion Seed Grant. The seed grant award was given to support Anatomy for Change, a student-developed project in the Biology Department. Anatomy for Change is an outreach program for minority pre-health students which provides hands-on workshops within a cadaver lab.
- Jennifer Nemhauser, Professor in Biology, was awarded an Andy Hill Cancer Research Endowment (CARE) Breakthrough Seed Funding Grant.
- Adam Summers, Professor in Biology, was awarded the 2023 Meritorious Teaching Award in Ichthyology from the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists and the American Elasmobranch Society.
- Bing Brunton was appointed as the Richard and Joan Komen University Chair.
- Briana Abrahms, Assistant Professor in Biology, was awarded the Packard Fellowship in Science and Engineering. This award provides the nation’s most promising early-career scientists and engineers with flexible funding and the freedom to take risks and explore new frontiers in their fields of study.
