Biology seeks to answer many of humanity's most open-ended questions and to continue making scientific breakthroughs by focusing on two critical resources — people and facilities. Among the attributes that make our department an attractive place to work, the effortlessly collaborative and collegial nature of what we do is perhaps the most compelling. Nurturing creative collaboration across the department and across disciplines has resulted in a tremendously productive department: we award more than 600 undergraduate degrees annually with fewer than 50 full-time faculty who bring in $10M annually in grant, contract, and gift funding to support research. The combination of our diverse, synergistic community and the opening of the Life Sciences Complex in 2018 will propel us further toward the cutting-edge of discovery and innovation. A Collaborative Department

UW Biology is one of very few departments in the country that is fully integrative across scales of time and organizational boundaries, studying the full range of biology from cellular structures to whole organisms in the past, present, and future. In order to maintain intellectual our department is made of broadly trained faculty, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students who inherently take multifaceted approaches to their research.  One third of UW Biology faculty hold joint appointments in other UW units and we have intellectual partnerships with colleagues at more than 50 other academic institutions worldwide, working in the natural and social sciences, engineering, medicine, law and business.
