Why Residency Matters
There is a cost difference in tuition for students who are residents of Washington state versus those who are not residents. For Autumn 2020, the tuition for a full-time in-state student is $5,798, compared to an out-of-state student at $10,098.
When you are appointed to a 50% or more Research Assistant or Teaching Assistant role, or have received a qualifying fellowship or scholarship, the Graduate school provides you with a differential tuition waiver that covers the difference in your tuition. However, if it should take you more than five years to graduate (as the department guarantees funding through RA or TA appointments for five years), you may be responsible for the full cost of tuition. Remember you must be enrolled for at least 2 credits during the quarter you defend your dissertation, even if you defend on the very first day of the quarter!
It is to your benefit to declare residency in Washington as soon as possible, just in case. Learn more via the links below.
