Description
The Friends of Biology Fund supports a wide range of activities including graduate and undergraduate student research symposia, outreach events, graduate student and faculty recruiting, the weekly Department seminar series, and our annual graduation celebration.
Specific use appropriateness is determined by the Chair and Administrator, but generally is limited to:
- Faculty and grad recruitment: possibly for dinners and entertaining as part of recruitment; may include recruitment visit for the spouse of a potential new hire (after an offer has been made)
- Monthly grad/faculty/staff networking events
- Employee recognition: retirements, special awards and honors, annual employee recognition event
- UW pride supplies for undergrad and grad programs
- Department retreats
- Support, food, and catering for department seminars and special lectures, e.g., the Mindlin Lecture
- Student Awards (from the small endowment distribution to this fund)
- Student and postdoc awards for poster sessions at the annual department retreat
- Expenses that other funds cannot provide (e.g., social event support, flowers for condolences or get well wishes for department members)
- Support and catering for department development and advancement
- Department celebrations, e.g., holiday party, annual fall and spring bbqs
- All allowable expenses on non-discretionary UW budgets are permitted on Friends of Biology as determined to be appropriate.
Procedure
All charges to the Discretionary Budget should have Chair or Administrator approval.
