First Look at Fossils From Antarctica
Wednesday, May 9, 10:30-11:30 am
Fossil Lab in the Testing, Testing 1-2-3: Work in Progress Gallery
Burke Museum
4331 Memorial Way NE, Seattle, UW Campus
Join us for the first look at recently-arrived fossils from Antarctica. Interview Dr. Christian Sidor, Burke Museum curator of vertebrate paleontology, and University of Washington Biology graduate student Megan Whitney about their recent research expedition and initial findings from the field.
Hear directly from Christian and Megan about what it's like to unearth 250-million-year-old fossils while battling freezing temperatures in one of the most remote landscapes on Earth.
Funded by the National Science Foundation, the expedition yielded fossils of amphibians, reptiles and mammal-precursors from just after the most devastating mass extinction in Earth history, including several potential new species from the Fremouw Formation.
Cameras are welcome!
