Faculty Retention Policy

Description

If the CAS retention guidelines are met (e.g. outstanding academic record, major impact on University programs, above-average merit evaluations, retention from a comparable institution, minimum of three years between retention offers) (https://admin.artsci.washington.edu/competitive-and-pre-emptive-offers), then when a faculty member receives an offer of a position at another institution, or such an offer appears imminent, the Department Chair will consult with senior faculty (including, but not limited to, the Executive Committee) on the merits of making a retention offer. Retention offers may include salary adjustments or allocation of resources; such offers are recommended by the chair, in consultation with the executive committee, and any commitment regarding future faculty hires must be brought to the entire faculty of the department for a vote. The Chair will negotiate any retention offer with the faculty member and the Divisional Dean for the Natural Sciences.
