Description
General Policy for all Biology spaces
- Each key requires an initial deposit of $15 for physical keys and $25 for CAAMS cards; the deposit doubles when keys are lost and must be reissued (and doubles again every subsequent loss).
- Offices: keys will be issued to the office occupant(s) only; the occupant can authorize that keys be issued to others (e.g., lab staff, other faculty collaborators). If others will be authorized to have a key to an office the keys will need to be ordered before they can be distributed.
- Classrooms and lab spaces: keys for rooms not on CAAMS will be issued to instructors and instructional personnel.
- Research labs: keys will be issued to members of the lab as authorized by the PI or PI’s pre-approved delegate.
- Building keys will not be issued for general use for LSB because they are not necessary. CAAMS replaces the need for building keys.
- Please ensure that doors close and latch behind you after hours.
- Do not provide building or lab entry to individuals you do not know after hours.
- Do not prop CAAMS doors open.
- PIs/PODS can elect to change the locks on procedure rooms or other research rooms to restricted access keying or keypad at their expense with approval of the Chair or Chair’s delegate.
- PIs will need to authorize ordering change keys for procedure rooms if they want undergrads/visitors to have keys.
Lost HuskyCard or Keys
- Lost/stolen keys and HuskyCards (and suspected compromised HuskyCards) should be reported immediately.
- In addition a lost (or suspected compromised) HuskyCard must be replaced immediately. Why? If your card is lost the CAAMS system will automatically update within 30 minutes of a replacement being issued. This is the most efficient way to ensure that the CAAMS access on the old card is removed as soon as possible.
- We will not issue temporary access cards to individuals who lose their HuskyCard. As above, the HuskyCard must be replaced immediately to decrease risk of unauthorized building access.
- Replacements for lost/stolen keys will require a deposit at double the amount, with any subsequent losses doubling the deposit again.
CAAMS (card access system for LSB) Information
- CAAMs system allows a level of security that we have not had in KIN, HCK, or JHN.
- CAAMS allows doors to remain secure, with access permitted by tapping the HuskyCard and based on authorized EIDs or student numbers.
- CAAMs keeps a history with every tap. This allows for trouble-shooting when doors do not close properly or are propped open.
- For the security of the building, the building occupants, and the labs, please be sure that all doors close and latch behind you. Do not hold doors open for others, especially people that you do not know. Visitors should be met by a member of the lab they are visiting.

*Areas are behind CAAMS card readers, but individual doors are keyed. For the teaching labs we will have the ability to authorize after hours access to students in a class based on the quarter’s class roster; access will expire at the end of the quarter. Students will need to be in the building prior to the building locking (7 pm).
Policy Rationale: to avoid unnecessarily issuing keys (which are costly, especially if lost keys require rekeying of a building), to set expectations for responsibility of maintaining custody of keys and Husky Cards, and to clearly define policy for issuing keys to personnel.
