Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming our world, and biology educators are navigating how (and whether) to integrate these tools into their courses. This seminar offers a clear and accessible overview of what AI is, how large language models work, and why understanding their strengths and limitations is essential for effective teaching when using AI tools.
BIO-AIs is a subcommittee of the UW Biology Undergraduate Program Committee (UPC). We are a group of Biology Educators and Staff collaborating to develop an online resource aimed at assisting our peers with information and materials related to AI and Biology Education. The UW BIO-AIs Activity Hub is an online resource designed to help educators quickly learn the basics of AI, consider reasons why instructors may choose/not choose to use AI in their course, and explore methods for thoughtfully incorporating AI into their class.
In addition, seminar participants will take part in a guided discussion including but not limited to examining practical pros and cons of AI-assisted learning, accuracy, ethics, academic integrity, classroom experiences, and environmental impacts. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions, share experiences, and reflect on how AI intersects with their own teaching.
This collaborative conversation aims to highlight real concerns, practical insights, and community support as we navigate an evolving AI landscape in biology education. Audience interests and responses will guide BIO-AIs in generating future resources and content for the BIO-AIs website.
