Letter from the Chair

To our Biology graduates: please accept our warmest congratulations on completing your degrees at the University of Washington! Your hard work and dedication have positioned you to make a positive difference in the world.

Through your access to this university, the instruction you have received, and your world-class peers, you have come to better understand the fundamental principles of life. You have acquired the background and reasoning skills necessary to navigate and contribute to conversations related to society and the world. Your ability to analyze data, to understand the nuances and interactions of complex systems, and to approach challenges with a scientific mindset is a powerful asset.

We are in a dynamic and complex political environment. There are day-to-day changes to funding for scientific research, discussions surrounding healthcare policies, and varying perspectives on environmental regulations – all of which directly intersect with the life sciences.

This backdrop makes your accomplishments even more significant – your expertise will be invaluable. Whether you pursue careers in research, medicine, biotechnology, policy, or education, your understanding of biology will allow you to engage meaningfully with the issues shaping our nation and our world. You are prepared to contribute to evidence-based solutions, to advocate for scientific literacy, and to inform public discourse on crucial matters.

So, celebrate this well-deserved accomplishment. You are among the few in this world to have received such an education; use your informed voice to teach others as you lead the conversations that will shape our future.

My heartfelt congratulations to each of you.
