I am currently interested in the molecular mechanisms underlying differential morphology among closely related Danio species.....
In other words, why does a zebrafish have stripes, but another member of the same genus have spots? What about the one with no stripes? Stripes and spots?? By using both manipulative and discovery based approaches, I am working to uncover the different genes, pathways, and evolutionary effects acting on a zebrafish that cause changes in pigment pattern. Specifically, comparing the the patterns of Danio rerio (the zebrafish) and Danio albolineatus, which is a closely related species with intermingled pigment cells and no apparent stripes.
Stay tuned for more...
