Description

The immune system allows you to live within this germ-infested world. It is at the center of the co-evolutionary struggle between pathogens and animals. The immune system is adaptable to fighting things it has never seen before and has the memory to last a lifetime. We will be discussing how the immune system mounts a response to various pathogens (particularly viruses), how vaccines work, and how allergies and autoimmunity arise. Topics will also include recent outbreaks and current events in the context of immunology and virology. Be prepared to learn, to read articles, and to contribute to discussions. Open-minds and curiosity required. Pre-requisite: bio220
