The Department of Biology has a number of endowments and gift funds that support graduate student research, undergraduate research and education, faculty research, annual lectures, and the Greenhouse. These endowed funds and gift funds are listed below. FELLOWSHIPS
Endowment for Graduate Student Excellence in Biology
The Washington Research Foundation and Benjamin Hall Endowment for Graduate Student Excellence in Biology provides fellowship support for Department of Biology graduate students conducting research in any system.
Crary Distinguished TA Writing Fellowship
The Charlotte Cornell Crary Distinguished TA Writing Fellowship supports Department of Biology graduate students who have made an outstanding contribution to teaching undergraduate courses during their graduate career. Recipients are supported for one quarter while they write their dissertation and prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
The Melinda Denton Writing Fellowship supports Department of Biology graduate students conducting plant systematics research for one quarter while they write their dissertation and prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Frye-Hotson-Rigg Writing Fellowship
The Frye-Hotson-Rigg Writing Fellowship supports Department of Biology graduate students conducting research on a plant system for one quarter while they write their dissertation and prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
The Kathryn C. Hahn Writing Fellowship supports Department of Biology graduate students conducting research in any system for one quarter while they write their dissertation and prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Tunnicliffe Writing Fellowship
The Tunnicliffe Writing Fellowship supports Department of Biology graduate students conducting research in any system for one quarter while they write their dissertation and prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
AWARDS
Botanical Field Research Award
The Botanical Field Research Award, also known as the Giles Award, provides support for Department of Biology graduate students conducting field research in plant science.
The Edmondson Award supports Department of Biology graduate student research in biological limnology, including freshwater and saline lakes and estuarine and intertidal zones, the plants and animals that live in them, and their physical properties.
Experimental and Field Ecology Award
The Experimental and Field Ecology Award supports research travel and purchase of supplies by Department of Biology graduate students engaged in field research.
Ingrith Deyrup-Olsen Graduate TA Award
This annual award recognizes an outstanding TA career of a Biology graduate student. Students are nominated by faculty.
The Iuvo Award provides support for Department of Biology graduate students conducting research in any biology discipline.
The Riddiford-Truman Award provides support for Department of Biology graduate students conducting research in the field of physiology.
The Sargent Award supports Department of Biology graduate students traveling for non-conference reasons, e.g., field work, special courses, and collaborations with other universities and international associations. Support is for students in any biology discipline.
The Snyder Award supports travel and purchase of research equipment and supplies by Department of Biology graduate students studying vertebrate zoology.
Wingfield/Ramenofsky Award for Environmental Biology
The Wingfield/Ramenofsky Award provides support for Department of Biology graduate students conducting research in the field of environmental biology, broadly defined.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Endowed Scholarship for Undergraduate Excellence in Biology
The Endowed Scholarship for Undergraduate Excellence in Biology provides scholarship support for Department of Biology undergraduate students. Selection of recipients is based on academic merit and financial need.
The Porath-Johnson Scholarship provides scholarship support for Department of Biology undergraduates. Selection of the recipient is based on academic merit and financial need.
Edith Lucena Riehl Scholarship
The Riehl Scholarship provides scholarship support for Department of Biology undergraduates. Selection of the recipient is based on academic merit and financial need.
AWARDS
The Casey Award supports Department of Biology undergraduates with costs associated with travel to present at scientific meetings, including conference registration fees, transportation, and/or room and board costs.
The Franco Award is an annual prize for the best undergraduate research paper in the biological sciences.
The Frye-Hotson-Rigg Award supports Department of Biology undergraduates with costs associated with fieldwork, research supplies, research-related travel, and/or travel to present at scientific meetings. Awards support students conducting research on a plant, algal, or fungal system.
The Sargent Award supports Department of Biology undergraduates with costs associated with travel for non-conference reasons, including field work, attending special courses, and visiting other universities or international institutions for collaborative research projects.
GENERAL
The Biology Research Support Fund provides broad support for faculty research in the Department of Biology.
Endowed Professorship for Excellence in Biology
The Endowed Professorship for Excellence in Biology provides support for professorships for Department of Biology faculty.
LAB SPECIFIC
Conservation Biology Support Fund
Provides support for the Center for Conservation Biology's critical research on the effects of human-related threats to species such as elephants and orca whales. For more information on the Center for Conservation Biology, visit their website.
Provides support for research conducted by the Center for Penguins as Ocean Sentinels. For more information on the Center, visit their website.
Jill Fredericksen-Adams Endowed Lecture
Supports an annual lecture in plant biology in memory of former graduate student Jill Fredericksen-Adams.
Melinda Denton Memorial Endowed Lecture
Supports an annual lecture in plant systematics in memory of Prof. Melinda Denton.
W.T. Edmondson Endowed Lecture
Supports an annual lecture in ecology or limnology in memory of Prof. W.T. Edmondson.
Aubrey Gorbman Endowed Lecture
Supports an annual lecture on emerging research in comparative physiology in memory of Prof. Aubrey Gorbman.
Frederick Ayer II Botany Greenhouse Endowed Fund
This fund provides support for costs associated with running the greenhouse.
This fund provides broad support for teaching, outreach, and research programs associated with and using the Urban Farm.
