FRIENDS OF BIOLOGY

The Friends of Biology Fund is one of the Department’s most important resources. It supports a wide range of activities including award ceremonies, graduate and undergraduate student research symposia, outreach events, graduate student and faculty recruiting, the Department Seminar series, and can provide small venture capital awards to support preliminary work for pioneering new research projects.

Graduate Students in the Field GRADUATE STUDENT SUPPORT

Graduate students are a vital component of the Department: they conduct and publish original research, teach labs and quiz sections, and participate in outreach events. The Graduate Student Fund provides the Department with funds to attract excellent graduate students, support their research, and reward outstanding teaching assistants.

UNDERGRADUATE SUPPORT

Biology is one of the largest undergraduate majors on campus with 1,000 declared majors and the Department strives to ensure that each student’s experience at the UW is meaningful and rewarding. The Undergraduate Student Support Fund fosters this endeavor by providing support for extra-curricular experiences such as conducting research and attending scientific meetings and conferences.

BOTANY GREENHOUSE SUPPORT

The Department of Biology’s Botany Greenhouse serves research, educational, outreach, and curatorial purposes. Donations to the Botany Greenhouse Fund support basic operational costs including the purchase of soil, fertilizer, equipment, and seeds. For more information about the plant collections, the research and outreach programs that take place in the Greenhouse, or touring the Greenhouse, please visit the Greenhouse website.

MEDICINAL HERB GARDEN SUPPORT

The Medicinal Herb Garden is home to hundreds of plant species used in historic and modern times for their medicinal properties. At two and a half acres, the Medicinal Herb Garden is one of the largest of its kind and hosts hundreds of visitors a year. Gifts to the Medicinal Herb Garden help preserve the garden as a teaching and outreach facility by supporting operational costs such as garden maintenance and signage upkeep. For more information about the Medicinal Herb Garden, please visit the Medicinal Herb Garden website.
