UW Biology Undergraduate Awards & Scholarships


The Department of Biology is pleased to be able to offer its undergraduate students support for their research projects and academic careers.


Upon notification of winning an award, students will work with department staff to purchase research supplies and/or tickets for travel. Scholarships are disbursed directly to the student's tuition account to pay tuition and fees.

Fall 2009 Award Application



Casey Award (up to $500)

The Casey Award supports Department of Biology undergraduates with costs associated with travel to present at scientific meetings, including conference registration fees, transportation, and/or room and board costs. The fund may also provide support for student research projects if expenses are beyond the ability of faculty mentors to cover.


Farner Award ($250 gift certificate to the University Bookstore)

The Farner Award is awarded to the most outstanding student(s) completing the Introductory Biology series (Biology 180, 200, 220) each year.


Frye-Hotson-Rigg Award (up to $2,000)

The Frye-Hotson-Rigg Award supports Department of Biology undergraduates with costs associated with fieldwork, research supplies, research-related travel, and/or travel to present at scientific meetings. Awards may only go to students using a plant, algae, or fungi system to work in the areas of botany, ecology, evolution, taxonomy, environmental science, or biodiversity.


Sargent Award (up to $1,100)

The Sargent Award supports Department of Biology undergraduates with costs associated with their research, including travel costs.

Spring 2009 Award Application


Biology - Friday Harbor Labs Award (up to $500)

The FHL Award supports Department of Biology undergraduates taking classes or conducting research at Friday Harbor Labs.


Casey Award (up to $500)

The Casey Award supports Department of Biology undergraduates with costs associated with travel to present at scientific meetings, including conference registration fees, transportation, and/or room and board costs. The fund may also provide support for student research projects if expenses are beyond the ability of faculty mentors to cover.


Franco Award ($1,000)

The Franco Award is an annual prize for the best undergraduate research paper in the biological sciences.


Frye-Hotson-Rigg Award (up to $4,000)

The Frye-Hotson-Rigg Award supports Department of Biology undergraduates with costs associated with fieldwork, research supplies, research-related travel, and/or travel to present at scientific meetings. Awards may only go to students using a plant, algae, or fungi system to work in the areas of botany, ecology, evolution, taxonomy, environmental science, or biodiversity.


May Garrett Hayes Scholarship ($1,000)

The May Garrett Hayes Scholarship provides tuition support for a Department of Biology undergraduate majoring in Plant Biology or a related field.


Porath/Johnson Scholarship (one year's in-state tuition)

The Porath/Johnson Scholarship provides one full-tuition (3 quarters) in-state scholarship to an undergraduate student in the Department of Biology. Selection of the recipient is based on academic merit and financial need.


Edith Lucena Riehl Scholarship ($2,000)

The Riehl Scholarship provides tuition support for a Department of Biology undergraduate. Selection of the recipient is based on academic merit and financial need.

Ingrith Deyrup-Olsen Prize for Future K-12 Teachers ($100)

The Ingrith Deyrup-Olsen Prize is awarded to a junior or senior who plans a career in K-12 biology teaching. This prize is awarded in honor of the late Prof. Ingrith Deyrup-Olsen, who was committed to teaching.
