The Department of Biology is the hub for the basic biological sciences at the University of Washington. Our mission is leadership in research and teaching of biology at the regional, national, and international levels.
Faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates in the Department of Biology research a wide array of biological sub-disciplines spanning from molecules to ecosystems. Basic research findings expand our knowledge of the natural world and can have broad impacts in fields such as conservation, technology, and human health.
Department of Biology faculty and students develop collaborative networks both within and outside the Department as they conduct research. These collaborative efforts foster the sharing of ideas, techniques, and technologies, thereby greatly increasing research potential and productivity.
