About the NW HHMI Net

The Northwest HHMI Network, or NW Net, was a collaboration between the HHMI Biological Science Education Programs in Oregon, Montana, and Washington. The partnership was initiated in 2006 with four founding members: Oregon State University (OSU), Montana State University (MSU), the University of Montana (UM), and the University of Washington (UW). In 2009, Gonzaga University joined as a newly funded HHMI college program in our region. This five-way partnership continued with HHMI support until 2010.

NW Net was designed to maximize the HHMI investment in our region and expand the reach of each individual program. Through the network, we shared best practices to improve the quality of science education and broaden training opportunities for participants of our undergraduate, faculty development, and K-12 outreach programs.

Opportunities for Students and Program Organizers

Through the NW Net, UW students were eligible for HHMI-funded summer research experiences at partner institutions. Our UW students also attended undergraduate research symposia and presented their research results to scientists at Oregon State University, University of Montana, or Montana State University. Our UW-HHMI program also hosted undergraduates from OSU, UM, MSU and Gonzaga University.

The NW Net student exchange program provided 25 undergraduates with opportunities to interact with scientists at other universities, and explore graduate training opportunities. As a result, a UW undergraduate who participated in the UM summer research project co-authored a research paper with her UM faculty mentor. In addition, two NW Net sponsored students visited partner institutions and were successfully recruited into OSU and UW graduate programs.

The NW Net held four meetings that brought faculty and staff from each program to UW, OSU, MSU, and UW Friday Harbor Laboratories. These meetings enabled program organizers to share best practices and resources for program development, faculty training, and curricular and program assessment.
